ACNE

Acne is caused by an overproduction of sebum (an oily substance secreted by glands found in the hair follicle). Bacteria build-up and this can result in a breakout. Acne can be triggered by hormonal changes, stress, make-up, diet and medication.

If dead skin cells lining the opening of the hair follicles aren’t shed properly, they can clog up the follicles. This build-up of oil in the hair follicles creates an ideal environment for bacteria to grow, which feed off the sebum and produce substances that inflame the skin. This creates spots and the redness associated with acne.

In more severe cases, inflammatory acne and cysts can develop beneath the skin’s surface. If these cysts rupture the infection can spread which can result in scarring. To avoid this, acne needs to be treated early and effectively.
